Statement of 7 December 2017 following a Delegation visit to Hong Kong, 4-6 December

Jo Leinen (DE, S&D), the Chair of the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China expressed concern for Hong Kong after a three-day visit there. He declared his support for the rule of law in Hong Kong and called it integral to the success of "one country, two systems".

Statement of 16 November 2017 following the 40th EU-China Interparliamentary Meeting

After the conclusion of the 40th EP-NPC Interparliamentary Meeting (IPM) held on 15-16 November in Strasbourg, the Chair of the EP-China Delegation, Jo LEINEN (S&D, DE), stated:

"It is becoming clearer every day that the EU and China need to show common leadership to tackle global issues like climate change, security and sustainable development. I therefore welcome the commitments made by China to play a constructive role on the global stage together with the EU. This engagement should happen with full respect of international rules and institutions, as agreed by United Nations conventions and decisions".

Statement of 13 July 2017 on the loss of Nobel Peace Prize laureate, LIU Xiaobo

Pier Antonio Panzeri, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, and Jo Leinen, Chair of the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the death today in Shenyang, China, of Nobel Prize laureate LIU Xiaobo.

We deplore the failure of the Chinese authorities to provide LIU Xiaobo with the necessary medical assistance to diagnose the illness at an earlier stage, and we call for accountability at all levels for those who wrongfully imprisoned him and failed to adequately address his state of health."

Statement of 17 March 2016 on China's adoption of the country's Five-Year Plan

Jo LEINEN (S&D, DE), Chair of the EP Delegation for relations with China (D-CN):

"The adoption of the 13th Chinese Five-Year-Plan with its ambitious goals for energy and climate policies gave the start signal for a global race on green growth and on the leadership for green technologies, energy efficiency and the digital economy."

By 2020, China wants to double its wind power capacity, triple its solar power output and put 10 times more electric cars on its roads.

"Those goals are strong signals for a sustainable development towards a low carbon economy."

Statement of 28 January 2016 on China's draft law on non-governmental organisations

Jo LEINEN (S&D, DE), Chair of the EP Delegation for relations with China (D-CN):

"European civil society organisations should not be seen as a threat, but as helping the development of China and of EU-China relations.

"Under the current draft law, many NGOs would reconsider their engagement in China and would most probably leave the country. China would lose a lot of opportunities for innovation.

"The EP Delegation for relations with China will address this issue in the upcoming meetings with its Chinese counterparts." [...]

Statement of 18 June 2015 on political developments in Hong Kong (DE)

Blockadehaltung der Regierung verhindert Wahlrechtsreform in Hongkong:

"Durch die Blockadehaltung der Regierung in Hongkong und deren mangelnder Kompromissfähigkeit ist heute ein Schritt zu mehr Demokratie in Hongkong verhindert worden", so Jo LEINEN (SPD), Vorsitzender der China-Delegation im Europäischen Parlament zu der heutigen Abstimmung im Hongkonger Parlament. Nach vehementen Protesten für ein demokratisches Verfahren bei der Nominierung der Kandidaten hatte die Regierung dieses Frühjahr zwei Runden öffentlicher Konsultationen ausgerufen. Die daraufhin im April vorgelegten Reformvorschläge sehen zwar eine größere Anzahl an Kandidaten vor, die anschließend jedoch von einem Nominierungskomitee auf maximal drei Namen reduziert werden soll.

"Die Regierungen in Hongkong und Peking sind nicht ausreichend auf die Forderungen der Demokratiebewegung eingegangen. Anstatt zumindest ansatzweise Kompromissbereitschaft zu zeigen, haben die Regierungen bis zuletzt gemauert und so jegliche Einigung unmöglich gemacht", kritisiert Jo LEINEN. [...]
