Statement on the decision to open EU accession talks with Skopje, 28 June 2018

Chair of the EP delegation to the EU-former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia JPC, Alojz Peterle, issued the following statement on the results of the General Affairs Council of 26 June 2018:

"The decision by the General Affairs Council to open accession negotiations with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia next June is a strong indication of European commitment to the country and recognition of ongoing reforms.

Cooperation and determination have brought us to this moment and I, like many others, believe the opening of accession negotiations is long overdue. The announcement on Tuesday indicated clear intentions and the future course. We should remember that the European perspective is not just about enlargement, but also the credibility of the EU.

My message to the citizens of the country is to keep the momentum and to pursue the path of reform. Your future is with Europe and you will not be forgotten. This is a positive step in the journey we will continue to make together."

"On behalf of the EP delegation to the EU-former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia JPC, I consider the decision of President Gjorge Ivanov to give the mandate to form a new government to the leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, Mr Zoran Zaev, to be an important step towards political stabilization in the country. I salute the efforts of all parties involved and their capacity to overcome political differences in the best interest of the country and citizens.
