Press statement of 15 May 2018 following elections in Malaysia of 9 May 2018

Dr Werner Langen, Chair of ASEAN Delegation of the European Parliament congratulates incoming Prime Minister of Malaysia Dr Mahathir.

The Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), who visited Kuala Lumpur from 10-11 May with a delegation of 6 MEPs from 4 different Member States and 4 political groups of the European Parliament, congratulated the Malaysian people for holding parliamentary elections in a democratic and transparent way.

Press release of 16 February 2018 following visit to Myanmar and Bangladesh

A delegation from the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), joined by Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee MEPs as well as a Member of the ASEAN Delegation visited Myanmar and the Bangladesh borders. The Delegation was headed by Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT).

The delegation held meetings with civil society organisations, religious leaders, ministers and parliamentarians.

Statement on Cambodia of 17 November 2017, MEP Langen

The Supreme Court of Cambodia dissolved the country's main opposition party CNRP (Cambodia National Rescue Party) yesterday. The court ruling came by request of the Government, which accused the CNRP of plotting to take power with help from the United States.

In a first reaction, the Chair of the ASEAN Delegation Mr. Langen (EPP, DE) characterised the court ruling arbitrary and politically motivated: "The decision is against the principles and values of democracy, which comprise essentially the possibility to choose among different parties and to change the Government."

Press release of 7 November 2017 following the ASEAN Delegation visit to Laos

Six Members of the ASEAN Delegation visited Laos from 1 to 2 November 2017 for the 6th EP-Laos inter-parliamentary meeting. The delegation was headed by the Chair Dr. Werner Langen.

The Delegation underlined the overall positive development of the EU-Laos relationship.

Meetings were held with a range of interlocutors from the National Assembly and Vientiane's Peoples' Provincial Assemblies, several Ministries, officials from the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the Lao National Steering Committee on Human Rights, as well as representatives from the private sector and civil society.

Statement following the ASEAN delegation visit to Cambodia, 30-31 October 2017

Six MEPs of the ASEAN Delegation of the European Parliament visited Cambodia from 30 to 31 October to discuss the EU-Cambodian relations and current political and economic situation.

The ASEAN Delegation of the European Parliament (6 Members from the three major political groups), headed by Chair Dr. Werner Langen and Vice-Chair Mr. Marc Tarabella, visited Cambodia from 30 to 31 October 2017 in order to receive first-hand information on a range of aspects of EU-Cambodian relations and on the current political and economic situation.

In its meetings, the Delegation underlined the overall positive development of the EU - Cambodia relationship. "The country has made enormous progress. The growth rate is impressive, accompanied by real progress in the fight against poverty", Dr. Langen stated.

However, the Delegation also expressed serious concerns about some recent political and human rights developments.
