Welcome from the Chair

In my capacity as elected Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Mercosur (DMER), I have the honour of chairing its meetings held in Brussels or Strasbourg, and of steering the meetings held with our counterparts from the Congresses of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela, which alternate between Brussels and the capital cities of the Mercosur States.

During the European Parliament's current term (2014-2019), DMER's main activity will be to make a positive contribution to the EU-Mercosur negotiations on the signing of an Association Agreement between the two blocs. The success of these negotiations, which have been going on for more than a decade, will open the way to the creation of the largest free-trade area in the world, with a market of more than 800 million consumers from more than 30 countries.

The future EU-Mercosur Association Agreement will also make it possible to strengthen interparliamentary links between the EP and the Congresses of the Mercosur States. In this sense, DMER will have a pivotal role to play in establishing closer contacts between legislators on both sides of the Atlantic.
