Enlargement of the European Union

Task Force Overview

The mandate of the Enlargement Task Force is to provide, within a Parliamentary framework, a timely, non-partisan and professional documentary and analytical support on selected matters concerning the accession of European States to the EU, in order to assist the Institution and its organs in its tasks relating to the monitoring and concluding of the accession negotiations.

The Task Force was originally set up in September 1997. Following a review of its mission and work carried out in 2000 against the background of the quickening pace and scope of enlargement after the Helsinki European Council, it was decided to retain and build on the successful Task Force format. The Task Force in its present composition started work in September 2000.

The Task-Force is currently concentrating its efforts on updating the various documents available on the enlargement website and on re-designing some aspects of the home pages to provide enhanced access and also reflect the country- by-country focus of the negotiations. Most of the existing features will be retained and updated while it is hoped to add others in the near future and, in particular, to give a clear overview of the European Parliament's contribution to the enlargement process.
