Plenary announcement on the occasion of President Rivlin's visit

Press Release - Foreign Affairs - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Strasbourg - 06-07-2016

It is a great honour for us to receive President Reuven Rivlin and his wife, Nechama Rivlin, here today. Mr Rivlin, I should like to thank you once again for accepting our invitation. The prevailing good relations with Israel are of enormous importance to us in the European Union. The State of Israel is more than just an important trading partner and political ally: our citizens are linked by a shared history, common values and an aspiration to social justice. It is shameful that anti-Semitism still persists as a deplorable reality in Europe. As politicians and as a society, we must further step up our efforts to grant better protection to Jews in Europe. Press Release - Foreign Affairs - Human Rights - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Strasbourg - 06-07-2016

Martin Schulz.
I warmly welcome the positive outcome of negotiations with the Council sealed today by the approval of an overwhelming majority in plenary. The creation of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, as a first step in the direction of an integrated EU border management system, is excellent news at a time when our external borders are under intensive pressure and so many lives continue to be tragically lost in the Mediterranean. They also benefit from what is possibly the world’s highest level of protection of fundamental rights. Our businesses, for their part, can conduct their activities in an environment of legal certainty, with an impressive pool of highly educated people to stay on the forefront in their sector. Press Release - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Brussels - 27-04-2016

I assume that all of us still know what we were doing on the 26th of April 1986. This day is etched deeply in our memory as 30 years ago, on the 26th of April 1986, in the former Ukrainian Soviet Republic, reactor unit 4 of the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl exploded. This was followed by a total core melt down, a huge disaster, and a resulting tragedy with dire consequences. Radioactive material was ejected into the atmosphere, large parts of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine were contaminated; the radioactive cloud drifted to Central Europe and the North Cape. (Read more)

I feel very privileged today. I feel privileged to receive this Laurea Honoris Causa from such a renowned academic institution. I feel very privileged to receive Rector Cataldi’s words of commendation and the speech by Professor Moretti, for which I am grateful. And I feel very privileged to be in the wonderful setting of Siena. Even if I am here for less than a day, simply walking through its medieval streets, entering one of the most beautiful and harmonious squares in the world – Piazza del Campo – is balm for the eyes and for the mind. I am here for less than a day and feel extremely privileged; you are here every day, and I hope you are well aware of your luck. (Read more)
