Press Release - Foreign Affairs - Human Rights - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Strasbourg - 06-07-2016

Martin Schulz.
I warmly welcome the positive outcome of negotiations with the Council sealed today by the approval of an overwhelming majority in plenary. The creation of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, as a first step in the direction of an integrated EU border management system, is excellent news at a time when our external borders are under intensive pressure and so many lives continue to be tragically lost in the Mediterranean. Press Release - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Brussels - 27-04-2016

I assume that all of us still know what we were doing on the 26th of April 1986. This day is etched deeply in our memory as 30 years ago, on the 26th of April 1986, in the former Ukrainian Soviet Republic, reactor unit 4 of the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl exploded. This was followed by a total core melt down, a huge disaster, and a resulting tragedy with dire consequences. Radioactive material was ejected into the atmosphere, large parts of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine were contaminated; the radioactive cloud drifted to Central Europe and the North Cape. (Read more)

Press Release - Brussels - 01-04-2016

I am saddened today by the passing of Hans-Drietrich Genscher. We lose a great, intelligent and influential politician. He was a convinced European, who significantly contributed to Germany's reunification and always fought for European integration. His life-time's achievements will never be forgotten. I myself am very grateful for the numerous, enriching encounters I had with him. I wish his family and friends my deepest sympathy in this difficult time. (Read more)

Statement by President Schulz on the attacks in Brussels

Press Release - Brussels - 22-03-2016

Martin Schulz.
I am horrified by the despicable and cowardly attacks which took place in Brussels today. My thoughts go out first and foremost to the victims and the wounded, as well as their families and friends. These acts anger and sadden me at the same time. They are born from barbarism and hatred which do justice to nothing and no one. Brussels, like other cities hit by such terrorist attacks, will stand strong, and the European institutions hosted so generously by the Brussels institutions and its inhabitants will do likewise. Schulz on the EU-Turkey Summit

Press Release - Brussels - 07-03-2016

Turkey and the EU are key partners. But our partnership needs to be built on mutual trust and straight-talking. Turkey is to be praised for the huge and continued effort it is undertaking concerning Syrian and Iraqi refugees. After many failed opportunities to tackle the refugee and migration situation, we need a game-changer. It must be clear that in our relationship Turkey needs the EU and the EU needs Turkey. This is not a one way street. Certainly, the EU is confronting an unprecedented refugee and migration crisis. But this is also true for Turkey, and on this our cooperation is essential. Tackling smugglers and illegal immigration networks must be a priority for both the EU and Turkey. Readmission is one central piece of this jigsaw. (Read more)

Press Release - Energy and Climate Change - Internal Policies and EU Institutions - Brussels - 12-12-2015

A month ago Paris was the theatre of the terror and hatred of the few. Today the world's collective consciousness and reason have come together in Paris to deliver a climate agreement which will make safer the future of our planet, for the current and next generations. 'Historic' is an often-abused adjective in politics, but today's agreement deserves this qualification: it outlines the path on which we all have to embark to strengthen the global response to climate change in the short, medium and long term.
