European Parliament President, Antonio Tajani, was in Berlin on 23 and 24 February.

On Friday, the European Parliament President met Chancellor Angela Merkel. They discussed pressing issues such as the future of Europe, security, migration and trade policy.

President Tajani said, “Chancellor Merkel is a true guardian of European and German values. We had a good meeting that focused on the future of Europe, security, migration and trade. We share the same view that we need to bring the EU institutions closer to EU citizens and make them work more effectively to provide concrete answers to their concerns.

With the sixtieth anniversary of the Rome Treaty upon us, we should look at the future and work in this direction.

We also agreed on the need to invest more in Africa for its own development and in order to manage immigration flows better."

A meeting with Bundespräsident, Joachim Gauck, followed this. Once again, President Tajani reaffirmed the European Parliament’s firm commitment to taking a leading role against populist forces.

President Tajani was hosted by the women entrepreneurs of the WeiberWirtschaft, a Berlin-based organisation dedicated to assisting women who want to start their own businesses. He also visited a bilingual, Italian-German school and engaged in a stimulating discussion with motivated young pupils.
