The European Parliament and European Commission will co-organise a high-level conference tomorrow that will bring together political leaders, experts and investors to discuss best practices in transitioning towards more sustainable energy sources, job creation, growth and investment.

President Tajani will open the conference at 09:30 with Jyrki Katainen, European Commission Vice President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness; Miguel Arias-Cañete, European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy; Jerry Brown, Governor of the State of California; Jerzy Buzek, ITRE Committee Chair and former European Parliament President and Werner Hoyer, European Investment Bank President

At 10:45, they will all participate in a joint press conference that will be held in the Anna Politkovskaya room.

Ahead of the conference, President Tajani stated:

“The European Parliament is at the forefront of the fight against climate change with more ambitious investments and targets for renewables and energy efficiency including the creation of a true single market for energy.

Europe’s experience is proving that the marriage between the environment and industry is not only useful but necessary. Only a strong industrial base and investment in new technologies can contrast climate change, strengthening our competitiveness while creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

In view of the reluctance of other global players, it is essential that the European Union continues to exercise its political, economic and technological leadership on energy and climate. We have demonstrated strong European unity by signing the Paris Accords and continuing at the COP 23, which began today in Bonn, to march together for their implementation.

I am convinced that the reluctance of the US Administration will not prevent growing cooperation between us and many US cities and states. I would like to thank California Governor Jerry Brown in particular for his participation in our event in the plenary. It is the sign of a global alliance that goes beyond contingent choices.”
