Συμπεράσματα της έκτακτης συνόδου του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου στις 17-21 Ιουλίου 2020 (B9-0229/2020) EN

I have voted in favour of the report, which is a great result for Europe, and for Malta. The agreed package is adequate to address the needs we are experiencing and will allow us to face this crisis as well as persistent and evolving challenges with strength and effectiveness, including in terms of climate change, as well as rule of law. It is important that this agreement is swiftly translated into law without unnecessary delays. This will concretely show that the EU is there for its citizens. However, I had some reservations and voted against some paragraphs in the field of own resources, taxation and MFF midterm revision. The draft MFF Regulation already contains provision for the MFF revision at any time in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, it makes a midterm revision unnecessary

I have voted in favour of the objection pursuant to Rule 112(2) and (3) of certain uses of chromium trioxide because I am in agreement with the objection to find alternatives to the use of this dangerous substance, which are safer and would put workers at less risk.

Αντίρρηση σύμφωνα με το άρθρο 112 παράγραφοι 2 και 3 του Κανονισμού: Δραστικές ουσίες, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της φλουμιοξαζίνης (B9-0203/2020) EN

I have voted in favour of the proposal to object to a draft European Commission implementing act to extend the approval period for 26 active substances, including flumioxazine, a substance that has been identified as toxic for reproduction. The proposal is calling on the Commission to withdraw its draft implementing act and submit a new draft “that takes into account the scientific evidence on the harmful properties of all the substances concerned, especially those of flumioxazine.

The motion for resolution on chemicals strategy for sustainability calls on the EU commission to step up against dangerous chemicals.
I voted in favour of this resolution as we must ensure that health and the environment are well protected and we must minimise the exposure to hazardous chemicals. This resolution pushes for further regulatory measures to adequately protect the vulnerable, particularly children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly

I fully support many of the measures proposed in this resolution and believe they would serve to give renewed impetus to ongoing efforts to eliminate money laundering and terrorism financing, much of which happens across borders.
At a time when governments are struggling to mount full-scale recovery programmes in the wake of the corona virus pandemic, the war must be sharpened against the criminals who siphon off funds that rightly belong to the community as a whole.
However I have had to abstain on this resolution on two counts.
First, it contains proposals that directly or by implication, fail to fully satisfy the balance that should be maintained between what devolves on central EU institutions and on national – in parts sovereign – competences. When such balance is not maintained, EU programmes are likely to fail
Secondly, it seems to endorse a perspective on my country Malta that to a large extent reflects a one-sided partisan and distorted assessment of the political, economic and professional situation there. The time has come to ensure that our resolutions in this House are no longer guided by not-so-hidden agendas that end up obscuring the aims which we seek to achieve.

Η στρατηγική της ΕΕ για τη δημόσια υγεία μετά την κρίση COVID-19 (RC-B9-0216/2020) EN

I have voted in favour because I believe that in order to achieve the right results and meet our commitments in the health strategy, there should be a stronger coordination between the Member States. Now we have the right opportunity to protect and strengthen our health systems against future threats. The COVID-19 pandemic has put European health systems under enormous strain, revealing gaps in the way the EU and its member states deal with public health emergencies. This strategy is the first step towards effective prevention, more and better research to have effective medicines and treatments, and vaccine accessible to all. With this Health Strategy, we can renew our commitments to the well-being of EU citizens and to all health professionals in order to guarantee them more protection, better working conditions and response capabilities in case of health emergencies. Moreover, we should not forget that COVID-19 has tremendously affected the lives of persons with disabilities. Besides, due to the pandemic, many persons with disabilities were left without appropriate healthcare and access to medicines. Many support and care services were not available due to the lockdown, and some confinement measures did not take into consideration the needs of persons with disabilities and their families.

. ‒ The European Citizens’ Initiative constitutes a major achievement in the Lisbon Treaty in the effort of improving the quality of European democracy. Therefore I voted in favour of the report, which welcomes the extensions needed to the collection period and the improvements introduced through Parliament’s amendments, allowing to facilitate citizens in introducing ECIs, as an effective way to respond to practical difficulties caused by COVID-19 in this procedure.

The EIB has supported the implementation of the EU's policy objectives by financing sound, long term investments in the real economy across a broad range of sectors.
Thus, I have supported this report as greater support should be given to 'green' investments. The EIB must have a role in financing the Green deal and must contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement
