On his first visit to Albania, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, today met with Prime Minister Edi Rama, with the Speaker of Parliament Gramoz Ruci, leaders of political groups, and think tanks before addressing the Parliament in Tirana
During his speech, President Sassoli stated::
“It is an honor to be here with you today. Together, we shared a moment of bitterness and sadness but you should know that you can trust the European Parliament and that we share the same vision: to reconcile the geographical and political area.”
“Last year’s decision was not a ‘no’; it was a slow-down, a moment of transition. We saw in the reaction of the Albanian people and institutions that you do not wish to give up but are dedicated to continue the path of reform. This is an important signal.
“Albania can be an example in this region. We have seen how this country has grown, that it is striving for dialogue and is making important reform efforts, for example with respect to the future electoral law and the fight against criminality and corruption. I therefore hope we can open negotiations in March or latest in June.
“You must not lose sight of the reforms that are still necessary. I encourage you to reflect on how you can further adapt your political agenda to the European one, for example when it comes to the European Green Deal.
“Let us use the coming weeks and months wisely. There is no Plan B for Albania. We will continue the journey that you embarked upon a long time ago together”
After the speech at the Albanian Parliament, Sassoli met the President of the Republic Ilir Meta and discussed with university students. On the second day of his visit, President Sassoli will meet the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj as well as with DP chair Lulzim Basha and SMI representative Klajda Gjosha. President Sassoli will also met and discuss with UNICEF representatives.
