Účelem programu Evropské unie PEACE je podporovat mír a usmíření a podněcovat hospodářský a sociální pokrok v Severním Irsku a pohraničních regionech Irské republiky.

Evropská unie přijala zvláštní opatření na podporu rozvoje svých nejvzdálenějších regionů: Guadeloupe, Francouzská Guyana, Réunion, Martinik, Svatý Martin (Francie), Azory a Madeira (Portugalsko) a Kanárské ostrovy (Španělsko). Cílem této podpory je zmírnit obtíže vyplývající z odlehlé polohy těchto regionů.

Fond soudržnosti zřízený v roce 1994 nařízením Rady (ES) 1164/94 poskytuje finanční prostředky na realizaci projektů v oblasti životního prostředí a transevropských sítí. Od roku 2007 jej lze využít i k podpoře projektů v oblastech týkajících se udržitelného rozvoje, např. energetické účinnosti a energie z obnovitelných zdrojů.
