The sixth meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol (JPSG) will take place on 22-23 March 2020 in Zagreb. The JPSG brings together Members of national parliaments and the European Parliament to fulfil the scrutiny and oversight on the activities of Europol including on fundamental rights. The JPSG meets at least twice a year. It is Co-Chaired by the European Parliament and the country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The agenda includes points resulting from the obligations formulated in articles 12, 51 and 52 of the Europol Regulation (regulation (EU)2016/794) including hearing the European data Protection Supervisor, the Europol Executive Director, the Chairperson of the Europol Management Board and discussing the Multiannual Work Programme. The agenda also includes high profile discussions on topics such as Europol External Strategy and Operational Agreements with Third Countries, the EU Internal Security Strategy and the Role of Europol and Innovation and Research at Europol. The meeting will give the LIBE Members the opportunity to obtain first-hand information on these topics and will enable them to scrutinise Europol's activities as foreseen in article 88 TFEU.

The Committee on Petitions organised a fact-finding visit to Bulgaria in the period 24-26 February 2020. In the first part, the members of the delegation met petitioners in Sofia along with the responsible state authorities, professional associations, consumer protection organizations and the Bulgarian Ombudsman to discuss issues related to the banking system and private enforcement agents.

In the second part, the delegation addressed another topical issue: waste management. MEPs visited the landfill in the town of Montana and met with the city's mayor and the regional environmental bodies to discuss alleged shortcomings regarding access to documents in environmental matters.

On 20 February 2020, the LIBE Committee will hold a hearing on artificial intelligence in criminal law and its use by the police and judicial authorities in criminal matters

This hearing is part of the work undertaken by the LIBE Committee on this topic. It will look at different questions related to the use of Artificial Intelligence in this context, such as benefits and risks of this new technology, predictive policing, facial recognition, as well as the ethical and fundamental rights implications. It will also take stock of current work conducted by the Council of Europe. The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA).

The CULT Committee hold a public hearing on "The use of Artificial Intelligence in education, culture and the audiovisual sector" on Wednesday 19 February 2020. Five experts were invited.

The purpose of the hearing was to enable CULT Members to know more about the development of AI in education, culture and the audiovisual sector, considering the increasing importance it has for these sectors. The impact AI may have on such sectors has been rarely discussed and is still mostly unknown. It will therefore help our Members to understand better how AI may transform these sectors, and which particular challenges the Union will have to face in the next decade in that regard.

Four experts from Portugal, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Belgium will debate with TRAN Members on the role of public transport in low-density areas. They will raise the specific characteristics and challenges faced by those areas and the resulting importance of services ensuring mobility. The hearing should provide an overview of good practices and case studies and would outline possible recommendations (logistics, pricing policies, etc.) for the future.
