Intercultural dialogue has multiple definitions but is increasingly seen as a means of promoting mutual understanding and exchange, so encouraging people of different cultures to live together harmoniously.

The briefing note provides an analysis of how the existent EU internal policies reflect the spirit and the letter of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity. This paper analyses the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which came into force in 2007, in the external relations of the EU. Particular attention is paid to the areas of international trade, development and human rights, as well as to the implications of the Convention in terms of governance. A set of conclusions and recommendations closes the document.
