The European Union is a contracting party to the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), and therefore the binding conservation and management measures adopted by this organisation must be enacted into EU law. The European Parliament is currently considering the Commission's proposal on the first transposition of SPRFMO measures.

On 25 April 2017, the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries adopted its first reading report on a European Commission proposal for a regulation concerning the conservation of tuna and tuna-like species and the management of fisheries targeting these stocks in the Atlantic Ocean (including adjacent seas such as the Mediterranean). The committee also proposed to start negotiations with the Council on this basis. This legislative proposal aims to transpose into EU law a number of binding recommendations ...

Since 1980, the EU has set up a network of bilateral fisheries agreements, providing fishing opportunities for the EU fleet in the waters of third countries. These agreements were concluded with countries in West Africa (1980-1998), in the western Indian Ocean (1984-1989), and in the western-central Pacific (2003-2007). Over the past few years, the European Commission has considered the possibility of expanding EU fleet access to new partner countries’ waters in the three regions. These fishing opportunities ...

The EU's trade policy does not exist in a vacuum. On the one hand, it is affected by international standard and rule-setting. The European Union is a contracting party to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), responsible for the management of these stocks and the fisheries exploiting them. Elements of international commitments made by the EU in ICCAT between 2012 and 2014, which are not already part of EU law, should be included therein. This also provides the occasion to group measures on a multiannual recovery plan for Bluefin tuna within a new regulation.

On 15 and 16 November, the Group of Twenty (G20) held the annual summit of its leaders in Antalya, Turkey. Recent events in Paris and the refugee crisis put concerns related to terrorism and conflict in Syria high on the agenda. First reactions since the summit suggest mixed success.

G20 energy ministers held their first ever meeting on 2 October 2015. Their discussion focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, universal access to energy and investments in energy. The ministers adopted the 'Toolkit of Voluntary Options for Renewable Energy Deployment', aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy around the world, as well as the 'G20 Energy Access Action Plan: Voluntary Collaboration on Energy Access', part of the overall G20 goal of ensuring universal access to affordable ...

The Group of Twenty (G20) was established in 1999 after a series of crises in emerging economies, as a forum of finance ministers and central bank governors. It comprises 'systemically important' developed and emerging economies (including the European Union) and its purpose is to improve coordination of global economic policies. Since 2008, the G20 has also met at the level of leaders, who hold annual summits organised by the rotating presidency. These gatherings are the culmination of a year-long ...
