Russia-NATO: A difficult relationship

NATO-Russia relations have never been easy, but hit a new low in 2014 following Russian annexation of Crimea. Since then both sides have stepped up military activity in their shared eastern European neighbourhood. A return to cooperation in the near future seems unlikely.

The system should provide defence against all types of missiles. A missile early warning system is being developed across the country. The A-135 system is being upgraded and integrated into the VKO. Missile defence exercises have been intensified across the country, with numerous tests conducted in the last months of 2012 and more planned for 2013. If the organisational and budgetary challenges are met, the VKO will significantly boost Russia's military strength.

Syrian short range ballistic missiles may reach major Turkish cities in the Anatolian province. Turkey has no own missile defence system. NATO's decision to develop a ballistic missile defence (BMD) system prompted harsh reactions from Russian leaders. Diverging views on the purpose and capability of NATO's BMD make cooperation with Russia difficult, but dialogue continues.
