An effective fisheries control system is essential to ensure that EU fisheries are managed in a sustainable manner, which in turn ensures the long-term viability of the EU fisheries sector.

Αναλυτικότερα

The Commission has proposed a revision of the EU Fisheries Control System (2018/0193(COD)) by amending the existing framework. The proposal on the revision of the fisheries control regulation is a key file in the implementation process of the new Common Fisheries Policy. This hearing is important, at this stage of the process in order to receive inputs from experts in the field, in view of preparing the draft report. The hearing focused on the weaknesses of the current EU fisheries control system. The Members of the Fisheries Committee exchanged with experts on best practices and how they could be further developed and implemented in the EU.

EPRS event on 11 November: Promoting social mobility and equal opportunities

This EPRS policy roundtable looks at the issues of social mobility and equal opportunities in Europe. Income inequality within advanced OECD countries has been on a steady rise in recent decades, and there is growing concern that high levels of inequality are associated with low levels of intergenerational social mobility.

Αναλυτικότερα

What do we know about chances and mechanisms for social mobility in Europe? To what extent can educational and labour market policies contribute to more equal societies? What are the possibilities and options for policy action in this field? This roundtable will explore these and other issues.

06-11-2019 18:15 - EPRS Annual Lecture: Clash of Cultures: Transnational governance in post-war Europe

Άλλη δραστηριότητα - EPRS
EPRS Annual lecture 2019

Prof Wolfram Kaiser, this year’s EPRS Fellow, will explain in the EPRS annual lecture that the European Union constitutes a peculiar mix of governance traditions and practices which in some respects have evolved since the middle of the nineteenth century.

Αναλυτικότερα

These are: (i) 'technocratic internationalism', or the notion of governance by transnational experts in the interests of all, as Jean Monnet put it - an understanding of integration that still informs European Commission attitudes and practices in particular; (ii) 'neo-corporatist or consociationalist cooperation' geared towards achieving broad consensus on policy-making, which reflects the heterogeneous character of the EU and nationally informed preferences of many governmental and societal actors; and (iii) the vision of the EU as 'a supranational parliamentary democracy', which has put the parliamentarisation of the EU centre stage. The lecture argues, however, that these three governance traditions have created tensions and, in some ways, undermined each other. In this way, they have become an easier target for Europopulists who are attacking all of these post-war traditions separately, and their peculiar mix within the present-day EU.

Άλλη δραστηριότητα - EPRS
EPRS-IMF event on 6 November 2019

Full title: Where next for Europe’s economy? The latest IMF European Regional Economic Outlook in a global context
This EPRS-IMF policy roundtable will look at the latest IMF Regional Economic Outlook for Europe, reviewing the current economic context and assessing the appropriate policy mix in an uncertain environment. The Outlook projects growth declining in most European countries and recovering only modestly in 2020.

Αναλυτικότερα

Downside risks come from a no-deal Brexit, escalating trade tensions, and sizable spillovers from trade and manufacturing weakness to other sectors. There are considerable differences, however, across sectors and between countries. Can the services sector avoid the drag from manufacturing and trade? Can 'emerging' Europe defy the slowdown in 'advanced' Europe? And will robust wage growth finally boost Europe's subdued inflation? These are some of the questions to be addressed in this joint EPRS-IMF event.
