Transgender people in the EU

Briefing 15-11-2010

Transgender people constitute a varied, yet distinct group facing specific social and legal problems. It has been reported that in most EU MS, transgender people do not enjoy adequate access to healthcare. The unemployment rate of transgender people is high when compared to general society. When employed, they are often discriminated against at the workplace. Changing gender is subject to many conditions and the acquired gender is not automatically recognised. Questions arise as to whether relevant procedures do not entail breaches of fundamental rights.
