Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have launched air strikes against towns controlled by rebels in eastern Libya, causing serious humanitarian concerns. On 10 March 2011, the European Parliament called on EU Member States to prepare for the imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya to protect civilians, if authorised by the UN Security Council (UNSC) and coordinated with the Arab League and the African Union.
