Almadraba are more labour-intensive than any other fishing method and their production is increasingly appreciated by a high-end consumer market ...

Discarding was considered by the European Commission a serious problem in European fisheries and one which must be addressed as a high priority. The aim of the present study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the discard problem on small-scale fisheries in Europe in order to put forward recommendations and policy-relevant advice for decision-makers.

Commercial inland fisheries are small-scale, labour intensive, traditional fisheries mostly using passive gear. They produce high value products of local importance. Inland fisheries will not be heavily influenced by the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy as they are mainly managed nationally. Diadromous species may benefit from the reforms as long as they are properly implemented. The new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund has greater potential to provide increased support to inland fisheries ...

The reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is being negotiated by the European Parliament and the Council. Some proposals aim at a differentiated approach for small-scale fisheries (SSF), but the characterisation of "small-scale" is far from uniform in view of the diversity of the EU fishing fleet and its activities.
