Los efectos desastrosos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la amenaza constante del enfrentamiento Este-Oeste hicieron de la reconciliación franco-alemana una prioridad fundamental. La puesta en común de la industria del carbón y del acero entre seis países europeos en 1951 mediante el Tratado de París, representó el primer paso hacia la integración europea. Los Tratados de Roma de 1957 reforzaron los pilares de esta integración y la idea de un futuro común para los seis países europeos.
