Toisen maailmansodan aikaansaama tuho sekä idän ja lännen välisen vastakkainasettelun jatkuva uhka tekivät Ranskan ja Saksan välisestä sovinnosta elintärkeän päämäärän. Pariisin sopimuksella vuonna 1951 toteutettu hiili- ja terästeollisuuden yhdistäminen kuuden Euroopan valtion kesken oli ensiaskel kohti Euroopan yhdentymistä.
