Vuonna 1994 perustetusta koheesiorahastosta rahoitetaan ympäristöalan hankkeita ja Euroopan laajuisiin verkkoihin liittyviä hankkeita jäsenvaltioissa, joiden bruttokansantulo henkeä kohden on alle 90 prosenttia unionin keskiarvosta.

Euroopan unionissa on otettu käyttöön yhteinen tilastollisten alueyksiköiden nimikkeistö NUTS, joka helpottaa yhdenmukaisten alueellisten tilastojen keräämistä, laatimista ja julkaisemista unionissa. Tätä hierarkkista järjestelmää käytetään myös alueellisten sosioekonomisten analyysien laatimisessa ja unionin koheesiopolitiikan yhteydessä toteutettavien toimien määrittelyssä.

EU:n PEACE PLUS -ohjelman tavoitteena on tukea rauhaa ja sovintoa sekä edistää yhteiskunnallista, taloudellista ja alueellista vakautta ja yhteistyötä Pohjois-Irlannissa ja Irlannin raja-alueella.
