Tachographs play a central role in road transport in the European Union (EU) through making competition between transporters fairer and roads safer for all users. The EP is now set to vote on proposals to update the rules on their use in the EU.

The technical condition of vehicles deteriorates with use and age, and with poor maintenance. Proposals for improved roadworthiness of motor vehicles along common standards, and through reinforced technical inspections and additional roadside checks, are now under consideration by the European Parliament.

La présente étude vise à présenter une évaluation de la qualité, de la quantité et de l’efficacité des contrôles opérés et des sanctions appliquées dans l’ensemble des États membres de l’Union européenne relativement aux dispositions en matière de sécurité routière. Elle décrit la mise en oeuvre de ces mesures et leur état d’avancement et met en évidence les bonnes et les mauvaises pratiques appliquées au sein des États membres. Un aperçu du cadre juridique actuel est également présenté.
