During its January plenary session, Parliament will debate and vote on three own-initiative reports on the common fisheries policy (CFP), taking stock 10 years after the last fisheries policy reform and responding to the Commission's evaluation of the policy. The reports will help shape the debate on the future of the CFP.

Between 2020 and 2022, the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) 'Stop Finning – Stop the Trade' collected more than 1.1 million signatures across the EU Member States. The European Parliament held a hearing on the topic in March 2023 and will discuss it during its May I plenary session.

Accounting for 17 % of the global average per capita intake of animal protein, fisheries products support many people's livelihoods and make a significant contribution to food security. However, more than a third of world stocks are fished at biologically unsustainable levels. Economic losses from the depletion of fish stocks are estimated at US$83 billion. A reduction in fishing capacity and effort would help stocks recover, yet many governments of fishing countries continue to support the sector ...

The expected outcome is the release of a new legislative proposal by the first half of 2021, in line with the European Commission's ...

Fisheries, and especially EU fishing rights in UK waters, played a prominent role in the recent negotiations on future EU-UK relations and ultimately became the final obstacle to reaching an agreement, being the very last point to be agreed. The new EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, settled on 24 December 2020, marks an important milestone in the long history of fisheries relations ...

The European Union is the world's largest market for fishery and aquaculture products, with a total value of extra-EU imports and exports reaching €26.6 billion in 2018. The consumption of fish in the EU exceeded 24 kg per capita in 2017, with the highest consumption levels in Portugal and Spain. In terms of production, the EU-27, excluding the United Kingdom, ranks sixth globally. This includes catches taken by EU vessels on the high seas and in the waters of third countries. The EU's self sufficiency ...
