Innovation plays an increasing role in our economy. It provides benefits for citizens as both consumers and workers. It is essential to creating better jobs, building a greener society and improving our quality of life, but also to maintaining EU competitiveness in the global market. Innovation policy is the interface between research and technological development policy and industrial policy and aims to create a conducive framework for bringing ideas to market.

The workshop organised by the Policy Department A for the IMCO Committee aimed at discussing problems in the area of franchising and the impact of the EU rules on functioning of the franchising contract. It allowed exchange of views on market conditions in the EU as well as corrective legislative and regulatory actions.

At its plenary session on 6 October 2015, the European Parliament (EP) adopted a resolution on the possible extension of protection of geographical indications (GIs) to non-agricultural products. The report adopted by the EP stressed the opportunity and need to create a uniform European framework of protection for GIs for non-food products.

Strengthened border controls have enabled seizures of drugs in transit to developing countries.  Civil society groups criticise this policy, as it could have a negative impact on production and trade in generic drugs.
