Between 2020 and 2022, the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) 'Stop Finning – Stop the Trade' collected more than 1.1 million signatures across the EU Member States. The ECI calls for a ban on trading in shark and ray fins within and from the EU. The European Parliament held a hearing on the topic in March 2023 and will discuss it during its May I plenary session.

Since the end of 2014, consumers in the European Union (EU) have had access to better information when buying fishery and aquaculture products. Mandatory labels or markings for retail sale of seafood (including some types of processed seafood) must, in particular, include information on both the commercial and the scientific names of the species, whether it has been fished or farmed, the catch area or country of production, and the fishing gear used.

This note analyses the definition of ‘small-scale coastal fleet’ in the CFP reform proposals. It examines the impact on various regions and it explores options for using additional criteria. Finally, it analyses the content of the specific regime proposed for the small-scale costal fleet.

This document compares the proposal for a Regulation (COM 99/0055 final) with the amendments adopted by the European Parliament and the text adopted by the Council (R (CE) n° 104/2000)

This study concerns the structure of the fish meal and fish oil industry in the European Union, and its role in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). It analyses, in particular, data concerning EU production/imports/exports of fish meal and fish oil, the interaction between the fish meal and fish oil industry and the fishing sector, fish stocks and marine eco-systems. It also evaluates the interaction between fish meal and fish oil consumption and human and animal health.
