EPRS event on 28 January 2020

Despite a reaffirmed EU commitment to enlargement, Member States' positions diverge on the speed and schedule of the process. However, maintaining a credible perspective on future accession is crucial for the Western Balkans countries, as well as for the European Union. In a resolution adopted on 24 October 2019, the European Parliament expressed deep disappointment over the failure to agree on opening EU accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia. […]

Ahead of the Zagreb Western Balkans Summit, policy-makers and experts will discuss the state of play of enlargement policy, followed by an opportunity for questions and comments from the audience.

21-01-2020 16:00 - Reducing GHGemissions from EU-related maritime transport: what’s next after EU MRV?

Meghallgatás - ENVI
ENVI Public Hearing on MRV

The ENVI Committee hold a public hearing on the topic of decarbonisation of the maritime transport in context of the ENVI Committee’s current work on the Commission proposal to amend Regulation (EU) 2015/757 on the monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon dioxide emissions from maritime transport (“MRV shipping”).

További részletek

According to international projections, global shipping emissions could grow by between 50 % and 250 % by 2050, depending on future economic and energy developments. If left unchecked, these emissions risk undermining the goals of the Paris Agreement and cancelling out the emission reductions achieved in other sectors. In her political guidelines, President Ursula von der Leyen committed to extending the EU Emissions Trading System, to cover the maritime sector.

The public hearing consisted of two panels:

First panel - GHG emissions from EU-related maritime transport state of play and future prospects

Second panel - Reducing GHG emissions from EU-related maritime transport: towards the setting of GHG emissions reduction objectives and the extension of the EU ETS to maritime transport

The hearing was web-streamed. You could follow it here.

21-01-2020 13:00 - Outlook for the MENA Region: What future for stabilisation and reconstruction?

Egyéb esemény - EPRS
EPRS event on 21 January

While conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are still ongoing, stabilisation and reconstruction remain top priorities on the international and regional agenda. Years of war have created new political and economic dynamics in Syria, Libya and Iraq, which make traditional approaches to these challenges difficult and problematic. How will the new realities on the ground influence the EU and international community’s willingness and capacity to respond? […]

További részletek

The repercussions of continued conflicts need to be analysed closely. Stabilisation and reconstruction remain a priority for many of the actors - whether local, regional or international - that have over time been involved in these conflicts.

Professor Luigi Narbone, Director of the EUI Middle East Directions Programme, and Professor Steven Heydemann of Smith College will debate these issues with a panel of experts. This event draws insights from the eBook 'Fractured stability: war economies and reconstruction in the MENA', which is available to download free at https://cadmus.eui.eu/handle/1814/64127 (short link http://bit.ly/32pBgFz). The eBook explores alternative approaches to reconstruction given the shortcomings of contemporary approaches to post-conflict reconstruction, and offers useful insights and recommendations to policy-makers.

A munkaértekezleteket a tematikus főosztályok szervezik, a költségvetési rendelettel összhangban.
