Durante la tornata di gennaio il Parlamento discuterà e voterà tre relazioni di iniziativa sulla politica comune della pesca (PCP), facendo il punto della situazione a dieci anni dall'ultima riforma della politica della pesca e rispondendo alla valutazione effettuata dalla Commissione su tale politica. Le relazioni contribuiranno a orientare il dibattito sul futuro della PCP.

Tra il 2020 e il 2022 l'iniziativa dei cittadini europei (ICE) "Stop Finning – Stop the Trade" (Stop all'asportazione e al commercio delle pinne di squalo) ha raccolto oltre 1,1 milioni di firme negli Stati membri dell'UE. L'ICE chiede il divieto del commercio di pinne di squalo e razza all'interno dell'UE e dall'UE. Il Parlamento europeo ha tenuto un'audizione sul tema nel marzo 2023 e ne discuterà durante la tornata di maggio I.

Il controllo della pesca mira a garantire il rispetto della politica comune della pesca (PCP) ed è pertanto una condizione essenziale per il suo successo. Il sistema di controllo dell'UE è attualmente in fase di revisione, con una proposta della Commissione europea volta a modernizzare il monitoraggio delle attività di pesca, migliorare l'applicazione e aggiornare le norme in linea con l'ultima riforma della PCP.
