Le conseguenze disastrose della seconda guerra mondiale e la minaccia costante di un confronto est-ovest hanno fatto della riconciliazione franco-tedesca una priorità essenziale. La condivisione dell'industria del carbone e dell'acciaio da parte di sei paesi europei, sancita dal trattato di Parigi del 1951, ha rappresentato il primo passo verso l'integrazione europea. I trattati di Roma del 1957 hanno rafforzato le fondamenta di tale integrazione e l'idea di un futuro comune per i paesi europei.
