Dėl pragaištingų antrojo pasaulinio karo padarinių ir nuolatinės Rytų ir Vakarų priešpriešos grėsmės Prancūzijos ir Vokietijos susitaikymas tapo svarbiausiu prioritetu. Tai, kad šešios Europos valstybės, vadovaudamosi 1951 m. Paryžiuje sudaryta sutartimi, kartu plėtojo anglies ir plieno pramonę, tapo pirmuoju žingsniu Europos integracijos link. 1957 m. Romos sutartys sutvirtino šios integracijos pagrindą ir sustiprino bendros šešių Europos šalių ateities idėją.
