The 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) takes place in Nagoya, Japan, from October 18-29, 2010. It coincides with the UN proclaimed International Year on Biodiversity and marks a watershed in the history of the Convention with the aim to set out a strategic plan for the next decade and a long term vision for 2050. This policy brief provides an update on the status of the CBD and main issues at stake for COP 10. It includes a short history of the CBD, an overview and analysis of the main issues, namely; a strategic plan and targets; a protocol on access and benefit-sharing; financing mechanisms; institutional interlinkages; and knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystems. The text explains the background of each issue and the positions of key countries, country groupings and other stakeholders.
