Eiropas Savienība ir izveidojusi kopējo statistiski teritoriālo vienību klasifikāciju, kas pazīstama kā NUTS, un tās mērķis ir Eiropas Savienībā veicināt saskaņotu reģionālo statistikas datu vākšanu, apkopošanu un publicēšanu. Šo hierarhisko sistēmu izmanto arī reģionu sociālekonomiskai analīzei un intervences pasākumu noteikšanai ES kohēzijas politikas ietvaros.

Eiropas teritoriālās sadarbības grupas (ETSG) tika izveidotas, lai veicinātu dalībvalstu un to reģionālo un vietējo iestāžu pārrobežu, transnacionālo un starpreģionālo sadarbību. ETSG dod iespēju minētajiem partneriem īstenot kopīgus projektus, dalīties pieredzē un uzlabot teritoriālās plānošanas koordināciju.

REACT-EU ir programma, ar kuru ir paredzēts panākt atveseļošanu pēc Covid-19 pandēmijas radītajiem sociālajiem un ekonomiskajiem zaudējumiem un sagatavoties zaļai, digitālai un noturīgai atveseļošanai. Ar REACT-EU iecerēts laikposmā no 2021. gada līdz 2022. gadam mobilizēt papildu 47,5 miljardus EUR struktūrfondiem un palielināt kohēzijas politikas izdevumu vieglu pielāgošanu.

Taisnīgas pārkārtošanās fonds ir finanšu instruments kohēzijas politikas jomā, kura mērķis ir sniegt atbalstu teritorijām, kas saskaras ar lielām sociālekonomiskām grūtībām saistībā ar pārkārtošanos uz klimatneitralitāti. Taisnīgas pārkārtošanās fonds palīdzēs īstenot Eiropas zaļo kursu, kura mērķis ir līdz 2050. gadam panākt ES klimatneitralitāti.

Eiropas Savienība atbalsta savu nomaļo apvidu attīstību, kas tiek dēvēti par tālākajiem reģioniem. Šie reģioni ir: Gvadelupa, Francijas Gviāna, Reinjona, Martinika, Majota un Senmartēna (Francija), Azoru salas un Madeira (Portugāle) un Kanāriju salas (Spānija).
