Pastāv īpaši pasākumi, ar kuriem atbalsta attīstību Eiropas Savienības nomaļajos reģionos, kas dēvēti par tālākiem reģioniem un ietver: Gvadelupu, Francijas Gviānu, Reinjonu, Martiniku, Majotu, Senmartēnu (Francija), Azoru salas un Madeiru (Portugāle) un Kanāriju salas (Spānija). Atbalsta mērķis ir kompensēt grūtības, ko rada šo reģionu ģeogrāfiskais attālums.

Kohēzijas fondu izveidoja 1994. gadā, pamatojoties uz Padomes Regulu (EK) 1164/94, un tas finansē projektus vides un Eiropas komunikāciju tīkla jomā. Kopš 2007. gada to atļauts izmantot arī projektu atbalstam jomās, kas saistītas ar ilgtspējīgu attīstību, piemēram, energoefektivitātes un atjaunojamās enerģijas jomā.
