Main issues at stake for the Convention on biological diversity COP10
The 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) takes place in Nagoya, Japan, from October 18-29, 2010. It coincides with the UN proclaimed International Year on Biodiversity and marks a watershed in the history of the Convention with the aim to set out a strategic plan for the next decade and a long term vision for 2050. This policy brief provides an update on the status of the CBD and main issues at stake for COP 10. It includes a short history of the CBD, an overview and analysis of the main issues, namely; a strategic plan and targets; a protocol on access and benefit-sharing; financing mechanisms; institutional interlinkages; and knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystems. The text explains the background of each issue and the positions of key countries, country groupings and other stakeholders.
