In accordance with article 53 of Regulation (EU) no 2018/1725 (Data Protection Regulation for EU Institutions) “the European Parliament and the Council shall appoint the European Data Protection Supervisor by common accord for a term of five years, on the basis of a list drawn up by the Commission following a public call for candidates. The list of candidates drawn up by the Commission shall be public and shall consist of at least three candidates.

On the basis of the list drawn up by the Commission, the competent committee of the European Parliament may decide to hold a hearing in order to enable it to express a preference."on 30 October 2019, the European Commission has transmitted to the European Parliament and the Council the short list of candidates in order to enable the two appointing authorities to conduct their own internal procedures and appoint by common accord the European Data Protection Supervisor. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, which is the competent committee for EU data protection law, will, therefore, hold individual public hearings for each of the short listed candidates for the appointment of the European Data Protection Supervisor The candidates shortlisted by the European Commission are (in alphabetical order): Mr Yann PADOVA, Mr Endre SZABÓ and Mr Wojciech WIEWIÓROWSKI. The hearing will take place on 25 November 2019 in Strasbourg.

Cross-border restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and wars

On 3 December 2019, the JURI Committee will host a public hearing on "Cross-border restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and wars". The event is organized as a follow-up to the European Parliament resolution of 17 January 2019 on cross-border restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and wars (2017/2023 (INI)).

Leading experts from a variety of national contexts from within and beyond Europe will discuss various aspects of restitution of cultural property with the aim to look at ways to ensure fair and just solutions for the return of looted art.They will provide opinions on the future actions required to ensure standard processes for making and pursuing claims, due diligence standards, and shared definitions of what constitutes loss both between and even within countries. Members will have the opportunity to ask questions to renowned experts in the area.

Five speakers representing all sides of the aviation sector will brief the TRAN Members about most recent developments and strategic planning in the low-cost air travel sector. The focus will be especially on the main challenges of digitalisation, decarbonisation, competitiveness, safety, climate change and improving working conditions and passenger experience.

On 10 December 2019, it will no longer be able to function, as the mandates of two of its three remaining members, out of seven, will expire. This can have major implications for the multilateral trading system.

Lessons to be drawn from the 2019 elections and proposals in view of the debate concerning the Future of Europe

The Committee on Constitutional Affairs is organising a public hearing entitled “Lessons to be drawn from the 2019 elections and proposals in view of the debate concerning the Future of Europe”, which will take place on 4 December 2019, at the European Parliament in Brussels.

In this hearing the Committee will hear the views of a number of experts, representatives of the EU institutions (European Commission and Parliament), as well as its consultative bodies (European Economic and Social Committee and European Committee of Regions). They will reflect on the lessons to be drawn from the 2019 elections. Furthermore, they will also discuss proposals in the context of the debate on the Future of Europe and the envisaged multi-stakeholder Conference on this issue, which should start its work in the course of 2020.
