Among the top priorities of the new European Commission are a 'European Green Deal' and a comprehensive EU strategy on AI. While 2019 proved a less difficult year than many predicted, much remains to be done to in relation to economic reform, foreign policy-making and effective action on climate change. Analysts from leading European think tanks will discuss what was significant about 2019, for Europe and the world, and present their thinking about the outlook for 2020.

As Europe marks the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, EPRS is organising jointly with the EP Former Members’ Association (FMA) and DG Communication, a special discussion with some of those most closely involved in institutional developments over the last decade, with a specific focus on the trajectory of the two EU institutions strengthened most by the Treaty, the European Parliament and the European Council.

For decades, the wolf was regarded as strongly endangered in Europe. Its population is now recovering in many areas of the continent.The joint ENVI-PETI public hearing, with the association of AGRI, will focus on the wolf population within the EU.

The basic objective is to have a better understanding on the status of wolf populations in EU and furthermore, to consider possible changes to the current management of the wolf population in Europe. The hearing will take place on 5 December 2019.

The reform of the common agricultural policy

AGRI in association with ENVI are organising on 4 December 2019 (15.30 to 18.30) a public hearing on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The hearing consists of 3 panels with two experts each, while each panel will address one of the three Commission proposals for the CAP reform, namely the Strategic Plans regulation, the CAP Horizontal Regulation and the Amending (CMO) Regulation respectively. The event will be concluded with a presentation of the relevant report by Committee of the Regions, while a European Commission representative will deliver a general comment on the reform.

On 4 December, the AGRI Committee, in association with the ENVI committee, organised a public hearing on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This meeting took place during the current legislative work on the CAP beyond 2020. It addressed the components of the CAP reform package, as amended by the AGRI Committee, which might be appropriate for further consideration.

The European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) initiative is designed to highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, celebrate the cultural features Europeans share, increase European citizens' sense of belonging to a common cultural area and foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities.

The hearing focused on the long-term legacy of the ECoC initiative, on the impact of the award on the development of cultural strategies of those cities, their networking and capacity building. It also addressed the issue of how to exploit the potential of the ECoC initiative more efficiently and tackle challenges more affectively, both at programming and organisation levels.

Two studies will be presented:
• Nicolas Véron and Anna Gelpern, 'An effective Regime for non-viable banks: US experience and considerations for EU reform', July 2019, a paper commissioned by the ECON Committee
• A study on the harmonisation of insolvency law conducted in the context of a Pilot Project on the Banking Union proposed by the European Parliament (to be published in the coming weeks by the Commission)
That workshop would also feature representatives from EU institutions and authorities to discuss possible ways forward.

This latest, monthly EPRS briefing seminar will focus on EU action against a particularly serious from of cross-border crime, namely terrorism. It will explain the background to EU counter-terrorism policy, based on common minimum rules and fighting against terrorist financing - for example, through internal market rules against the use of explosive precursors, and soon action against terrorist content online. The Union also mobilises resources against radicalisation, raising awareness through a multidisciplinary network of excellence. A series of experts in the subject will explain the policy from first principles, followed by an opportunity for questions and comments from the audience.

The Committee on Constitutional Affairs organised a public hearing entitled “Lessons to be drawn from the 2019 elections and proposals in view of the debate concerning the Future of Europe”, which took place on 4 December 2019, at the European Parliament in Brussels.

In this hearing the Committee heard the views of a number of experts, representatives of the EU institutions (European Commission and Parliament), as well as its consultative bodies (European Economic and Social Committee and European Committee of Regions). They reflected on the lessons to be drawn from the 2019 elections. Furthermore, they also discussed proposals in the context of the debate on the Future of Europe and the envisaged multi-stakeholder Conference on this issue, which should start its work in the course of 2020.

Hearing on EU Strategy

On 4 December, FEMM Committee will hold a hearing on the EU Strategy for Gender Equality (2020-2024). The aim of the Hearing is to receive input from civil society and the academic world regarding the report on the same topic that will be drafted in the coming months.

The event will count on the participation of a representative of the European Commission, several representatives of civil society organisations covering the different aspects of the Strategy and a member of the academic world. The rapporteur for this dossier, Ms Maria Noichl (S&D, Germany) will also participate in the hearing.

Hoorzittingen

Volgens artikel 193 van het Reglement kan een commissie een hoorzitting met deskundigen beleggen wanneer zij deze noodzakelijk acht om een bepaalde zaak naar behoren te kunnen afhandelen. Hoorzittingen kunnen ook gezamenlijk door twee of meer commissies worden gehouden. De meeste commissies houden regelmatig hoorzittingen om deskundigen te horen en over kernzaken te kunnen discussiëren. Op deze pagina staat alle informatie over de hoorzittingen van commissies, inclusief programma's, posters en bijdragen van de sprekers.

Workshops

De workshops worden georganiseerd door de beleidsondersteunende afdelingen in overeenstemming met het Financieel Reglement. Workshops zijn niet altijd openbaar; maar kunnen worden gehouden tijdens commissievergaderingen.

Tijdens workshops kunnen leden vragen stellen aan en van gedachten wisselen met deskundigen over onderwerpen die verband houden met de parlementaire werkzaamheden of met de actualiteit.
