This introductory briefing paper introduce five key messages on how the Erasmus+, European Solidarity Corps (ESC) and Creative Europe (CE) programmes (and the proposals for successor programmes) address environmental challenges.

In het kader van de bevordering van mobiliteit en intercultureel begrip heeft de EU het leren van talen aangewezen als een belangrijke prioriteit en financiert zij talloze programma's en projecten op dit gebied. Meertaligheid speelt volgens de EU een belangrijke rol in het Europese concurrentievermogen. Een van de doelstellingen van het Europese taalbeleid is dan ook dat iedere Europese burger naast zijn moedertaal twee andere talen beheerst.

Jeugd is een nationaal beleidsgebied. Om die reden is een harmonisatie van de wetgeving van de lidstaten uitgesloten. Op Europees niveau wordt het jeugdbeleid volgens de gewone wetgevingsprocedure vastgesteld. Whilst commonly understood, "youth" is a difficult concept to define from a policy-making perspective. Nevertheless in the eyes of national governments and European leaders, youth policy has grown increasingly important in recent years.

In the EU Member States there are more than 50 million young people aged between 15 and 25. It is the Member States which are main responsible for the area of youth.
