While Nigeria is Africa's largest nation and its biggest economy, in social indicators it often ranks below the Sub-Saharan Africa average. Oil wealth has brought only limited social progress, and with population growth set to continue unabated for many years to come, Nigeria needs to improve social services and labour market access for the young.

Nearly half of all people living in extreme poverty are aged 18 or under. Children and young people are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion, violence and abuse. Od 1989 r. warunki życia dzieci uległy poprawie, lecz wciąż miliony dzieci pozbawione są ochrony.

Niedożywienie można uznać za najczęstszą przyczynę zgonów dzieci poniżej piątego roku życia, ponieważ w krajach rozwijających każdego roku umiera 3,1 mln dzieci. Organizacje pozarządowe dopingują do tego, aby walka ze zjawiskiem niedożywienia dzieci oraz zapewnienie ogólnego dostępu do odpowiedniego pożywienia pozostały jednym z głównych celów planu realizacji milenijnych celów rozwoju po 2015 r. zarówno w UE, jak i w szerzej rozumianej wspólnocie międzynarodowej.

This report summarises the presentations and discussions at the Workshop on “Newborn Infants”, held at the European Parliament in Brussels, on Wednesday 24 April 2013.
