Unia Europejska ustanowiła wspólną klasyfikację jednostek terytorialnych do celów statystycznych, zwaną NUTS, aby ułatwić gromadzenie, opracowywanie i rozpowszechnianie zharmonizowanych regionalnych danych statystycznych w UE.
