The 2020 Worskhop on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, organised by the Policy Department on Citizens' Rights and Constitutional Affairs upon request of the Committee on Petitions, focuses this year on the new EU Disability Strategy 2021-2030. With the current EU Disability Strategy 2010-2020 coming to an end, the EU is working to equip itself with a new Disability Strategy for the years 2021-2030.

The Commission is evaluating the current strategy and consulting institutions, stakeholders and the general public to build up a new comprehensive Strategy that ensures the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities by better implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Committee on Petitions plays an important protection role in the EU framework for the implementation of the UN CPRD, as it receives petitions from citizens, discusses them and engages in discussions with other institutions and Member States so to find a solution. Thanks to this role of protection of citizens' rights, it is in a privileged position to discuss and make concrete proposals for the new Strategy, which is the aim of the 2020 Workshop.

The Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM), in association with the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age (AIDA), will hold a public hearing on “Women and digitalisation” on 28 October 2020 between 14:15 - 15:45 remotely.

How to tackle the gender digital gap? Which gender aspects need to be taken into consideration when developing AI policies and legislation? How to increase the participation of girls and women in digital fields?

Such questions will be raised while exploring the gender aspects of the digital transition and of artificial intelligence, in the context of several dossiers on which the FEMM committee is currently working: "Closing the digital gender gap : women's participation in the digital economy", "Promoting gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and math education and careers" and "Shaping the digital future of Europe".

The Health Working Group of the ENVI Committee requested the Policy Department A to organise a webinar on the issue of climate change and health, covering issues such as climate threat on physical health, the mental charge of climate change on vulnerable groups and regions and food and nutrition security concerns caused by climate change.

On 27 October 2020, the Policy Department for Citizens Rights and Constitutional Affairs will organise a workshop on "Liability of companies for environmental damage" for the JURI Committee.

The workshop is aimed at examining the transposition, effectiveness and enforcement of the Directives on Environmental Liability and on Environmental Crime and the measures that could be envisaged for the prevention of environmental damage by corporations. It shall also be the occasion for the presentation to JURI of the findings and conclusions of the study commissioned by the Policy Department on Environmental Liability of Companies.

On 27 October 2020, the Policy Department for Structural and Cohesion Policies presented a new study "Impact of the use of offshore wind and other marine renewables on European fisheries" at the PECH Committee meeting.

The study provides an overview of general impacts of the development of offshore wind farms and other marine renewables on the European fishing sector. It further highlights pathways for possible co-existence solutions of both sectors, a description of best practice examples and lessons learnt, the identification of research gaps and last but not least the presentation of policy recommendations.

This hearing is organised in relation to the joint LIBE-FEMM implementation report (2020/2029(INI)) on Directive 2011/36/EU on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings and protecting its victims that represents the main instrument for combatting THB within the EU. This event will represent an opportunity to hear several organisations' representatives and experts' contributions as regards the gaps in the present legislation and in the implementation of this directive and to look into which measures would be needed at EU and national levels to reinforce the application of the Directive.
