Fisheries in Germany

The present note was requested by the Committee on Fisheries of the European Parliament for its Delegation to Germany (24-26 Mars 2014). The note provides a review of the main characteristics of the German fisheries sector, covering both the North and Baltic seas. It provides an overview of issues such as the legal and institutional framework, fisheries management, catches, the fishing fleet, fishing industry, trade, employment, the fish market and marine research.

Accidents occurring offshore in relation to the Oil and Gas (O&G) industry may produce significant damaging effects on the marine environment, and particularly on the fishing and aquaculture industries. The economic cost of the impact that major offshore accidents have on fisheries is most frequently assessed with the Social Cost method, accepted by the current international compensation framework. The basic regulation for the fishing activity in the Mediterranean Sea is Council Regulation (EC) No 1967/2006 of 21 December 2006. It has provisions about Management Plans and Fishing Protected Areas. This Note reflects the situation in those two issues after 7 years of application.
