Există măsuri specifice pentru a sprijini dezvoltarea regiunilor celor mai îndepărtate ale Uniunii Europene, cunoscute sub denumirea de „regiuni ultraperiferice”: Guadelupa, Guyana Franceză, Réunion, Martinica, Mayotte și Saint-Martin (Franța), Azore și Madeira (Portugalia) și Insulele Canare (Spania). Acest sprijin are drept obiectiv compensarea constrângerilor legate de poziția geografică îndepărtată a acestor regiuni.

Fondul de coeziune

Constituit în 1994 prin Regulamentul (UE) nr. 1164/94 al Consiliului, Fondul de coeziune finanțează proiecte din domeniul mediului și al rețelelor transeuropene. Din 2007, el poate susține, de asemenea, proiecte din domenii legate de dezvoltarea durabilă, precum eficiența energetică și energia din surse regenerabile.
