Na podporu rozvoja najodľahlejších regiónov Európskej únie, tzv. najvzdialenejších regiónov, medzi ktoré patria Guadeloupe, Francúzska Guyana, Réunion, Martinik, Mayotte a Saint Martin (Francúzsko), Azory a Madeira (Portugalsko) a Kanárske ostrovy (Španielsko), bolo prijatých niekoľko osobitných opatrení. Cieľom tejto podpory je zmierniť obmedzenia vyplývajúce z odľahlej zemepisnej polohy týchto regiónov.

Kohézny fond

Kohézny fond, zriadený nariadením Rady (ES) 1164/94 v roku 1994, poskytuje finančné prostriedky na realizáciu projektov v oblasti životného prostredia a transeurópskych sietí. Od roku 2007 sa z neho môžu podporovať aj projekty v oblastiach súvisiacich s trvalo udržateľným rozvojom, ako sú energetická efektívnosť a energia z obnoviteľných zdrojov.
