Európske mechanizmy finančnej pomoci sú zamerané na zachovanie finančnej stability EÚ a eurozóny, pretože finančné ťažkosti v jednom členskom štáte môžu mať významný vplyv na makrofinančnú stabilitu v iných členských štátoch. Finančná pomoc je spojená s makroekonomickou podmienenosťou (je to skôr úver ako fiškálny transfer) s cieľom zabezpečiť, aby členské štáty, ktoré prijímajú takúto pomoc, vykonávali potrebné fiškálne, hospodárske a štrukturálne reformy, ako aj reformy v oblasti dohľadu.
