Každý občan Európskej únie má od nadobudnutia platnosti Maastrichtskej zmluvy právo adresovať Európskemu parlamentu petíciu vo forme sťažnosti alebo žiadosti v otázkach, ktoré patria do pôsobnosti Európskej únie. Petície posudzuje Výbor Európskeho parlamentu pre petície, ktorý rozhoduje o ich prípustnosti a zároveň je zodpovedný za ich spracovanie.
