Faced with the need to provide long-term support to Ukraine and upgrade its own defence, the EU is revisiting its financing arrangements for the Common Security and Defence component.

Evropska unija od osemdesetih let 20. stoletja posebno pozornost namenja izboljšanju zdravja in varnosti pri delu. Z zakonodajo na evropski ravni so bili opredeljeni minimalni standardi za zaščito delavcev, vendar pa to državam članicam ne preprečuje ohranjanja ali uvedbe strožjih ukrepov. Z začetkom veljavnosti Lizbonske pogodbe je postala Listina EU o temeljnih pravicah pravno zavezujoča, s čimer sta zdravje in varnost postala še pomembnejši področji zakonodaje EU.

Evropski socialni sklad je bil oblikovan z Rimsko pogodbo, da bi izboljšal mobilnost delavcev in možnosti zaposlovanja na skupnem trgu. Njegove naloge in pravila delovanja so bili pozneje prilagojeni glede na gospodarska gibanja in razmere na področju zaposlovanja v državah članicah ter glede na razvoj političnih prednostnih nalog, opredeljenih na ravni EU.
