This study surveys the current status of large carnivores in Europe and assesses their impact on livestock from the available data on compensation payments and from field research. Recommendations on livestock protection measures are provided, as well on the integration of these into locally adapted holistic management systems.

After centuries of intensive hunting large carnivores like brown bears, Eurasian lynx and wolves are now recovering in many areas of Europe. The LIFE workshop aims to inform the Members of the ENVI Committee and all participants on the implementation of LIFE programme 2014-2020 and the first results of its integrated projects. The workshop will answer the question on how the new edition of LIFE is contributing to the achievement of environmental protection and climate change targets in the most effective way. Future funding opportunities and environmental topics to be covered by the LIFE Programme up to 2020 will be also presented.

The European Commission has proposed to include some measures of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) in EU law, in so far as they are not yet included therein. In doing so, it also proposed to group all the measures on a recovery plan for bluefin tuna within a new regulation. Having taken a position on legislative amendments in January 2016, the EP is now due to vote on a text negotiated in trilogue with a view to reaching a first reading agreement.
