To besedilo obravnava pristojnosti Sodišča Evropske unije, ki ga sestavljata dve sodišči, in sicer Sodišče Evropske unije in Splošno sodišče. Sodišče nudi različne vrste dostopa do sodnega varstva, kot to določajo člen 19 Pogodbe o Evropski uniji (PEU), členi od 251 do 281 Pogodbe o delovanju Evropske unije (PDEU), člen 136 pogodbe Euratom in protokol št. 3 o statutu Sodišča Evropske unije, ki je priložen Pogodbama.

Sodišče Evropske unije je ena od sedmih institucij EU. Deli se na dva dela: samo Sodišče Evropske unije in Splošno sodišče. Odgovorno je za pristojnosti Evropske unije, s svojima dvema sodiščema pa zagotavlja pravilno razlago in uporabo primarnega ter sekundarnega prava Unije v EU.
