Faced with the need to provide long-term support to Ukraine and upgrade its own defence, the EU is revisiting its financing arrangements for the Common Security and Defence component.

Allt sedan 1980-talet har en bättre arbetsmiljö varit en viktig fråga för EU. Unionslagstiftningen har infört minimistandarder för skydd av arbetstagare, men hindrar inte medlemsstater att behålla eller införa mer långtgående åtgärder. När Lissabonfördraget trädde i kraft blev EU:s stadga om de grundläggande rättigheterna rättsligt bindande, vilket gjorde att arbetsmiljöpolitiken blev en ännu viktigare del av unionslagstiftningen.

Europeiska socialfonden (ESF) inrättades genom Romfördraget för att förbättra arbetstagarnas rörlighet och deras möjligheter att få arbete på den gemensamma marknaden. Fondens uppgifter och reglerna för verksamheten har därefter reviderats för att avspegla utvecklingen av det ekonomiska läget och sysselsättningen i medlemsstaterna samt de politiska prioriteringar som fastställts på EU-nivå.
